Nails were expensive and difficult to obtain in the American colonies, so that abandoned houses were sometimes deliberately burned down to allow recovery of used nails from the ashes. From the late 16th century, manual slitters disappeared with the rise of the slitting mill, which cut bars of iron into rods with an even cross-section, saving much manual effort.)Īt the time of the American Revolution, England was the largest manufacturer of nails in the world. (Workmen called slitters cut up iron bars to a suitable size for nailers to work on. Until around 1800 artisans known as nailers or nailors made nails by hand – note the surname Naylor. Nails themselves were sufficiently valuable and standardized to be used as an informal medium of exchange. The term "penny", as it refers to nails, probably originated in medieval England to describe the price of a hundred nails. The Roman army, for example, left behind seven tons of nails when it evacuated the fortress of Inchtuthil in Perthshire in Scotland in 86 to 87 CE. The Bible provides a number of references to nails, including the story in Judges of Jael the wife of Heber, who drives a nail (or tent-peg) into the temple of a sleeping Canaanite commander the provision of iron for nails by King David for what would become Solomon's Temple and in connection with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In at least some metalworking traditions, nail-headers might have been identical to draw-plates (a plate bored with tapering holes of different sizes through which wire can be drawn to extrude it to increasingly fine proportions). Unable to advance through the hole, the broad end is flattened against the nail-header to create a nail-head. The broad end of the pin is slightly wider than the hole of the nail-header: the smith fits the pin into the hole of the nail-header and then hammers the broad end of the pin. This is then inserted into a nail-header (also known as a nail-plate), essentially a plate of iron with a small hole in it. In hand-working of nails, a smith works an approximately conical iron pin tapering to a point. The pole will be making stops across the US to raise awareness about the efforts to protect sacred waters and lands. The process is formed by a chemical reaction when material is immersed in a high temperature solution. It is generally used for appliances, visible structural parts, architectural adornments and the like.īlack oxide finishing is a blackening conversion coating used on a variety of ferrous metals and alloys, among them, stainless steel. The process is used on various stainless steel grades and can be applied to meet spec-required finishes for products and parts. Electro-polishing can be applied to a wide range of stainless steel grades and provides a lasting bright finish.Īs a surface finish, belt polishing leaves stainless steel with a decorative, aesthetic, or high luster mirrored finish. The process uses an electrochemical solution to remove the outer layer of a metal surface, leaving a uniform layer free of embedded contaminants, micro-cracks, pits, and various surface imperfections that could compromise the longevity and performance of a part. Glass beads are an excellent choice for stainless steel applications that require a softer, brighter finish, and it has the added benefit of being used multiple times.Įlectro-polishing is a stainless steel surface finish used to polish, passivate, and deburr metal parts. Sandblasting can be done to remove a previous finish, to remove rust or stains, or to prepare a surface to receive a new coat of paint. Common sandblasting media included steel shot, silicon carbide and glass beads which are shot at high speeds through a machine nozzle over a surface until it is sanded smooth. Sandblasting is an abrasive blasting finishing technique that uses various blasting materials to achieve a specific finish to a metal’s surface. Types of Stainless Steel Surface Finishes To help in deciding which secondary process is best suited for your company’s needs, here are six common stainless steel surface finishes for consideration. Stainless steel surface finishes will largely depend on the intended post-fabrication application. Some finishing services may require commercial cleaning and capping or thermocouple cleaning and capping stainless steel material already in service. Finishes can meet design needs, too, leaving aesthetically pleasing appearances for architectural or other decorative applications. The importance of stainless steel surface finishes is in providing an added layer of protection against oxidation, corrosion, rusting, and staining. But it is more familiar as that shiny, silver-like surface found on many household products in the bath and kitchen. The alloy is well-known for its high corrosion resistance due to its minimum 10.5% chromium content by weight. Having said that, if it's not a lot of trouble it would be nice to have a patch so I can at least see if that's the issue without changing the entire install.Īhah! The previous rocket family (100-200t to LEO class) worked because I maintain a standard excess delta-V when designing my rockets of about 300 m/s. It sounds like the actual fix is to update the game. This sounds very much like my problem because I've had some bizarre negative numbers before (add boilerplate mass, delta-V goes up in the VAB, for example). The part will still get mass because RF will calculate new tank mass for it. If you need to I can come up with a patch that will take care of that. If the part has no mass then our mod's are not able to subtract mass) (literally, we start out by subtracting the tank's base mass from the part before we do any other mass manipulation. Since the cause is that both SSTU and Real Fuels start out by removing the part's mass, they are both prevented from setting the part negative. If you don't want to update KSP right now, there is a workaround which I had forgotten about which is to set the tank part's base mass to zero. ShadowMage released an update which has SSTU opt out of mass (and cost? Maybe?) management if Real Fuels is installed and the SSTU has ModuleFuelTanks installed.īUT, I don't know if it will run on KSP 1.4.5 Both mods are trying to manage tank mass and only one should be allowed to do so. The cause is a mod conflict between SSTU and Real Fuels. (you could even make note of how much propellant was left when thrust stopped working and then reload and enable the cheat just before propellant level drops to that point) Then look at the vessel mass in the engineer's report or with a mod like MechJeb or Kerbal Engineer.Īlternatively you can enable the infinite propellant cheat in the cheat menu and then see if you still have that thrust problem. Then set the resource sliders to zero for that tank part. You can test for this in the VAB by making whatever tank the engine in question is drawing from and make that tank root so you can remove all other parts from it. This is also the same thing that causes rockets to occasionally become 'stuck' to the launch pad. Unity RigidBody has to have positive mass in order for any forces to operate on it. Net mass at launch was positive but propellant depletion dropped it below zero. The actual part mass would already have been negative. What I think is happening is that a tank's mass has dropped below zero. I realize I may have to reinstall and update, and that's nbd, but I figured I'd ask around first. I have used this install configuration for a long time, but this error or whatever is new. I am using an update of SSTU appropriate for 1.4.5. Everything else remains the same as if the engines were still on, including consumption of fuel. Orbital velocity stops increasing and control authority due to being under thrust ceases. (it may sound like a stupid question but I have an idea what might have happened which has nothing to do with the engine so I need to know exactly what it is you experienced to make you think there was no thrust)Įdit: And there may not be a solution possible if you're playing in KSP 1.4.5 unless you can get the most recent SSTU update to run with that version of KSP. What exactly do you mean when you say they aren't producing thrust? Aside from the lack of error in the engine, does the engine's PAW say that thrust has dropped to 0? I'm not sure what mod may be causing this and my googling hasn't turned up anything so right now I'm just fishing for people who might have had the same experience (and hopefully fixed it). No engine shutdown occurs and there is no shutdown error given (e.g., vapor in fuel lines). I'm using parts largely from SSTU, and my RL-10s are burning fine until they reach less than 1,000 m/s delta-V left and then they continue consuming fuel but produce no thrust. I'm running 1.4.5 with RO and a gaggle of other mods, and I've run into a strange issue.
